Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) has been reported to be one of the most dreaded diseases of man. A 2007 report from the World Health Organization (WHO) revealed that about 33.2 million persons are living with HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus), the virus that causes AIDS. And about 2.1 million were reported killed by AIDS in the same year.
But a more dreaded, but too-often neglected, virus is the Human Information-Deficiency Virus (HIV-3). At the maturity stage of this ‘viral infection’, it degenerates into Acute Information-Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS-2).
SYMPTOMS OF AIDS-2
Common symptoms of AIDS-2 are poverty, self-centred leadership, bad governance, unaccountability, people-demeaning and people-disempowering policies, weak economic structures, religiosity, bureaucracy, sentimentalism, excessive indulgence, ‘wannabe-ism’, victimization (especially of subordinates). And in organized settings like the workplace environment, symptoms range from complacency, complaining, chinwagging, cheating, to lack of courtesy and respect, nonchalance, improper work ethics and a wobble work culture or habits.
At the later stages of AIDS-2, it is not uncommon to start experiencing consistent lateness and absenteeism, a hike in customer complaints, a dive in patronage, organizational plateau, improper accounting system, fraudulence, high employee turnover, and in several cases, eventual business closure.
CURE OF AIDS-2
Unlike AIDS, AIDS-2 cannot be depressed, repressed or suppressed; it must be addressed. It’s no use trying to treat the symptoms. These are just the fruits. You don’t change the quality of the fruits by plucking off all the existing fruits or trimming the branches. You must go to the roots.
If you’re experiencing symptoms of AIDS-2 in your organization, the following are a few things you can do:
1. Check your Business Plan. What is the future you envision like? Do you actually have one?
2. Check your Business Model. How do you make money, in such a way that stands you out from the competition?
3. Check your Recruitment Plan. Do you have any system in place that makes sure you always have the right people in the right places?
4. Check your Development Plan. Do you have any system of ensuring your staffs are continuously equipped and empowered to become better on their job?
ALARM! Unlike AIDS which kills its victims, AIDS-2 does not kill. Rather it progressively renders its victim useless, valueless and worthless. A far more dreaded condition than death itself.
